Why Surfers Get Lean

The reason why surfers get lean are many. The exercise is just part of it. The mind set becomes a big part of it as surfers become connected with the ocean and Nature. Connecting with Nature is healthy and soon a healthy mind leads to a healthy body.

Being lean is very helpful for surfing progress. Professional surfers spend more time out of the water cross training than they spend practicing in the water. Surfing is a full body sport that demands overall body strength, flexibility, and stamina. It can take time each day to train each of these aspects.

The Surfer Training Regimen

Surfers spend time in the water paddling and riding waves. Paddling is the most work with surfing and the aspect that tires beginners. This is one reason for them to use high volume soft tops that are easy to paddle. Paddling is like swimming, but you are powering a surfboard with your body on top. There are intervals where you paddle hard to catch a wave and then you have to paddle back out through the waves.

The best training for paddling is, of course, paddling, but after that building the upper body helps. Barbells and dumbbells for bench presses, military presses, and tricep building all help. Pulling cables can exercise the arm, shoulder and chest muscles. Portable cables you wrap around a post can be used at home.

Flexibility is important and stretching is just the beginning. I have found that squats, burpies, and dead lifts strengthen and stretch the hamstrings, buttocks, and lower back. If you included these exercises and added push ups you would have a good routine.

Nutrition is important to stay slim and support exercise. As surfers become more connected to Nature, they realize the spiritual value of eating wholesome foods. Everything on earth lives mainly off the land and stays healthy by limiting diets to natural foods. Surfers become spiritual and then more wholesome in all their habits.
