What beginners learn in Oceanside surf lessons

Beginner surfers are often intimidated by the new experience and by the ocean. What you learn in Oceanside surf lessons is first to get comfortable in the ocean. At the same time you are learning the basic techniques.

The dry land portion of the surf lesson teaches the techniques for safety and popping up on a surfboard. If the student is anxious, they have a hard time remembering what to do as the brain pushes them to use their instincts.

The problem with instincts is they are wrong. The surfing sequence for popping up is not something the brain understands, and it must be conditioned to react correctly. I give students a count to match the sequence they should say out loud to override what the brain wants to do. New students start in waist deep water so there is no likelihood of drowning.

The sequence is paddle, to catch the wave. Then the surfer puts their hands on the board next to their rib cage. Then they push up and move one foot under their butt and place it flat on the board. Then they stand on that one foot while lifting their hands off the board. As they do this, they move the other foot forward and place it in front of their body.

The correct stance on the board is what I call “pushing a tall box. Both hands are in front and the hips and shoulders are square to the front. Weight is equal on both legs and knees are flexed. This will take the surfer straight to the sand.

The count I ask beginners to memorize is paddle, stop and glide (placing hands on board for a few seconds), push (push up), back foot, stand up, front foot. While the student is anxious, they have a hard time remembering. After a few pushes into the waves when the student learns nothing bad happens, they can start focusing on the count.

Once students have mastered riding to the beach, they can start paddling out to catch bigger foam waves and then small real waves. Students that can learn, have good coordination, and a little courage can progress fast. Being normal weight is extremely helpful.

Within a half hour, most students have overcome their fears and are working hard on getting the right sequence. Even before they have mastered the techniques they are saying it is very fun. Fun is the whole idea.
