Beginner Surfers Learn the Pop Up

the pop up sequence

Beginner Surfers Learn the Pop Up which determines how fast they can progress. The pop up is part of the sequence from catching the wave to riding to the beach.

I give new students in Oceanside a sequence with a count I ask them to say out loud for catching a wave and popping up. The new student’s mind goes “gaga” when they are in the water, so the count and sequence keeps them focused.

Learning the Count to be Said Out Loud

The count is paddle, stop, push up, back foot, stand up, and front foot. Paddle is catching the wave, stop is resting with the hands in a man’s pushup position, push and back foot occur right after each other, and as the surfer stands, he moves his front foot to the nose.

The count begins with catching the wave. As the foam wave rolls and the student is in waist deep water, they roll over onto their surfboard and paddle easy to get a little momentum. They watch for the wave to approach from the side. When it is three feet away, they paddle hard to get in front of the wave .

The count then proceeds to the pop up. The surfer puts their hands on the board in a man’s pushup position. Then they push and put one foot flat on the board under their butt. They stand on that foot, releasing their hands from the board. This is crucial. If the foot is not flat, the student cannot stand and release their hands. If they don’t release their hands and stand up, they can’t get the other foot to the front of the board because the arms are blocking it.

Getting the Feet Right

If the student puts the second foot on the board and the hands are still there, their head is in front of their feet and they fly off the front of the board. Students often can’t get the foot flat because they lack the flexibility. This is a major hold back to progress.

To prepare for the pop up, the new student should do pushups, dead lifts, and squats. These can be done without weights. They increase upper and lower body strength and create flexibility in the hamstrings, buttocks, and lower back.

The proper stance on the surfboard is feet shoulder width apart, weight equal on front and back leg, and hips and shoulders square to the front. If there is a trailing arm and should like in snowboarding, the surfer will fall off the butt side of the board.

When the beginner surfer learns the pop up, executes in the water, and rides to the beach without falling off, they can paddle out through the foam to catch bigger foam waves and then attempt small real waves.
