Fundamentals Learned in Surf Lessons

The fundamentals learned in Surf Lessons in Oceanside will serve beginners as they progress to advanced surfers. The basics are the same for beginners in foam waves and advanced surfing in real waves.

Surfing is about rhythm and timing. Each time the wave arrives, the surfer goes through the same techniques in a smooth sequence. The basics become muscle memory and the surfer no longer has to think about what he is doing to ride the wave.

The Fundamentals of Surfing

Beginners first learn how to get on the surfboard properly. Their feet must be at the back of the board and their body straight as a pencil in the middle to prevent the board from pearling or tipping while catching the wave.

Catching a foam wave is timing just as catching a real wave, but easier. When the wave is 20 feet from the surfer, he rolls over onto his board and starts paddling. When the wave is about to hit the board, the surfer paddles hard to accelerate in front of the foam.

When the surfer has caught the wave, he places his hands on the board in a man’s push up position next to his chest. He does not grab the rails. He then pushes up keeping his weight even on both hands.

The pop up is a sequence. I give student’s a count. The beginner pop up is paddle, stop (placing hands on the board), push, back foot (the back foot is placed flat under the butt in the middle of the board), rise (lifting the torso and hands) and then place the front foot near the nose.

The posture on the board is feet shoulder width apart. Weight equal on the front and back leg. Hips and shoulders squared to the front. Hands in front of the body. This posture and pop up can be used on both foam and real waves and stays the same as the student progresses to advanced surfer.
