Can Adults Learn to Surf

Often prospective students ask me Can Adults Learn to Surf. It is a great question. Age is functional more than conditional. Kids, teens, adults, and seniors can all learn to surf, but they all have different capacities based on more than age.

Surfing demands flexibility. This is the one handicap that can be found at any age, even kids. Power to weight ratio is the surfing term for ability to lift one’s body into a standing position on the surfboard. This handicap is found at all ages, usually from being overweight and sedentary.

How Adults Learn to Surf

The surfing fundamentals require an ability to learn and follow instructions. This entails the brain and the body learning together what is heard. I have found the best learners are 14 year old girls who are in the midst of all kinds of new physical learning experiences like gymnastics, dance, soccer etc.

The less people are learning or the longer it has been since they learned some new physical exercise or recreation, the more difficult time they have learning the surfing techniques. All the muscles and joints must be conditioned to flow in a smooth functioning flow.

The new student begins by rolling onto the surfboard and paddling to catch a foam wave. When the wave gets close, the student paddles hard. After a few paddles, he puts his hands on the surfboard in a man’s push up position. Then he pushes and puts his back foot on the board under his butt. He stands on it and puts his front foot on the board.

The surfer’s body must be in the right stance. His feet are shoulder width apart and his hips and shoulders are squared to the front while weight is equal on the front and back foot. Knees are flexed and the surfer is now riding straight to the beach.

Some surfers get the whole routine on the first ride. Some don’t get it at all. Most get it during the process of the lesson from continuously being reminded of what they are not getting right. Boys have a hard time listening to instructions. Women take in every detail. Everyone else falls in between. The better you listen and can follow what is being said, the quicker you correct your mistakes.

So, it should be clear that age is only one issue. Physical conditioning, weight, and ability to learn are far more important. There are articles on this site and books on how to prepare for surfing and lose weight. Doing both can be a powerful regimen to improving your lifestyle for any recreation.
