How Oceanside Surfers Go from Beginner to Advanced

how Oceanside surfers go from beginner to advanced

Some Oceanside Surfers go from Beginner to Advanced in one Lesson. On some occasions beginner students in lessons have learned on foam waves and then learned how to catch real waves.

Learning to surf requires the ability to learn and coordinate what is heard to the body. It also helps if the surfer is normal weight and fit. It therefore goes without saying that people that can’t learn, aren’t coordinated, and are overweight have lots of challenges.

Starting with the Foam Waves

The beginner surfer in Oceanside learns to catch foam waves in waist deep water on soft top boards. Based on weight, they may learn on an 8′ or 9′ board. Soft tops are excellent for surfers to ride real waves and do basic maneuvers before moving to hard boards.

The beginner surfer learns timing and rhythm. This is necessary to progress. It means the student recognizes the sequence and executes perfectly. Most students are anxious, and their brain doesn’t allow them to execute what they just heard in the dry land lesson. The purpose of the in-water instruction is to get students to slow down and focus.

The beginner student sees the foam wave and when it is 20′ feet away, rolls over onto the board and starts an easy paddle, He looks to the side and when it is about to hit the board, he paddles hard to get in front of the foam.

Now he is ready to execute the popup. He places hands next to his rib cage and glides for a few seconds, This keeps his anxiety from taking over the next steps. Then he pushes up and places a foot flat on the board under his butt. He rises lifting his hands off the board and making room for the front foot. Some students get it on the first run and they are going to progress fast.

Moving from Beach Foam Waves to Bigger Foam and Real Waves

Next the student paddles out through the foam wave and turns to catch bigger foam waves. When he gets this, he starts looking for small real waves in the same spot. Real waves break on the outside and roll toward the beach. They often reform into smaller real waves which are great for beginners to catch.

The timing differs with real waves because they only open for a few seconds and the surfer has to be in the right spot for the wave to roll under the board. On small real waves, the surfer often has to paddle 8 to 10 times because they don’t have the push of foam waves.

After catching the inside real waves, a surfer can paddle out and try the bigger real waves. This takes courage. Beginners don’t like to crash and the move to real waves will entail more crashes and having the wave fall on the surfer from bad positioning.

Most surfers take three lessons or more to get to this level, but some can get it the first day.
