Beginner Surf Techniques for Soft Top Boards

beginner surf techniques for soft top boards

Learning to surf with Beginner Surf Techniques for Soft Top Boards. The beginner wants a high volume board that makes it easy to paddle, catch waves and ride. The soft tops were made to order.

The surfer can stand in waist deep water on most sand bar bottom beaches and wait for the foam wave to roll in. When it is about 20′ away they roll over onto the board with their feet at the very back above the tail and their nose in the middle so the body is straight as a pencil and balances the board perfectly.

When to Start Paddling

The surfer starts paddling getting in about three strokes. The hand drives into the water up to the elbow and pulls with the forearm. The stroke is half a swim stroke and even with both arms. When the wave is about to hit the board, the surfer paddles hard for 4 strokes to get in front of the foam wave and get the tail out of the foam. Patience here to paddle long enough.

When the board is at peak speed the surfer will feel it take off. The surfer needs to get a feel for this moment to perfect foam and real wave riding. At peak speed, the surfer puts his hands flat on the board near his waist. This allows a good push to get the midsection of the board.

Executing the Beginner Pop UP

The surfer pushes and brings a foot under his butt and places it flat on the board. He stands on the foot balancing on one foot for a few seconds as he lifts his hands off the board (crucial) and moves the other foot to the front of the board placing it in the middle at a 45 degree angle forward. It is important to get the hands off the board so the front foot can get under the body to the front.

The surfer lands in the right stance. Picture standing on the board with feet shoulder width apart and pushing a tall box. Both hands are in front making hips and shoulders square to the beach. This puts the body with equal weight on both sides of the central stringer. Weight is equal on front and back leg and knees are flexed. Surfers like to feel the board with their feet so they can correct the angle the board pursues.

Once the surfer has mastered the foam wave to the beach, he can paddle out to catch bigger foam waves and then small real waves.
