Sedentary People Get Fit to Surf

sedentary people get fit to surf

Sedentary People Get Fit to Surf so they can learn the basic fundamentals. Surfing is physically demanding but has some specific requirements. Flexibility is the biggest obstacle sedentary people encounter.

The surfing pop up has the surfer prone on the surfboard and paddling to catch a foam wave. When in front of the wave, the surfer places his hands flat on the board and glides for a few seconds. Then he pushes up and places a foot flat on the board under his butt so he can stand on it for a few seconds. This is necessary to get the hands off the board so the other foot can travel to the front.

Flexibility is King

Flexibility is needed to get the foot flat and many sedentary and athletic people don’t have that stretch. Squats and dead lifts are the best exercises to loosen the hamstrings, buttocks, and lower back. Weights are not necessary but can be added to build strength in the legs for standing up.

Upper body strength is needed for the push up and for paddling. The surfer pushes his upper torso off the board to get the foot underneath it. Hard paddling is needed to get the board in front of the wave. Shoulders, arms, back, and chest could all be built with pushups. A number of other exercises with weights and cables could be complementary.

Stamina Creates Longer Sessions and Ability to Surf Every Day

The final necessity is stamina. A surf session lasts as long as the surfer can paddle. Paddling like swimming is demanding of the cardiovascular system. Aerobics are premium for building cardiovascular including long walks, jogging, hill climbing, biking, swimming, and treadmills. Cardio builds the ability to exert in interval type aerobics (paddling) and recovery.

If the surfer is overweight, everything is more difficult. Check your body size on the Body Mass Index Calculator. It calculates underweight, normal, overweight, and obese as a function of height and weight. If you are overweight, losing weight makes surfing easier. All surfers want to lose weight to put less weight on the board for easier paddling and increased agility.

The more time you have to prepare for surfing the better. Preparation doesn’t end at learning. Surfers work on increasing physicality and weight loss perhaps during their whole career. It does create a new lifestyle when you perform better, look better, and get healthier. Books below can help get surf fit.
