Foreword

Surfing is really fun. It’s one of the first things new students say. Getting propelled by a wave while riding on a surfboard is a very Nature connecting experience. It is akin to flying.

Most students say it is not as easy as it looks. This is also true. The techniques of surfing are easy to explain, but not as easy to execute in the water. People have much more respect for surfers after they try it the first time.

Surfing is very physical. Yet, most people can do it. Everyone from kids to seniors can surf. It is not like riding around in a car. There is paddling, dealing with waves, and, of course, riding the board to the beach.

Take the time to learn the techniques. Get in better physical shape if you are not there already. The results of learning to surf and being in better physical shape affect our quality of life, our gratitude, and our “stoke”.

Parts of Chapters:

Chapter Two

Getting in Shape to Surf

Surfing is physically demanding, but remember you start in shallow water and you can get out anytime you want or rest when ever you want. The three activities that are helpful develop flexibility, upper body strength, and stamina.

Chapter Four

Learning the Beginner Surfing Pop Up

For beginner surfers, the pop up is the most challenging physical technique. Many people that dream of surfing think they need balance. I would say the correct technique is more important. If you get up properly and stand on the board properly, you can surf.

Chapter Five

Learning the Advanced Surfing Pop Up

The advanced pop up is more difficult for most beginners because it requires more upper body strength, a good core, and some athleticism. In this pop up, the first three counts are the same as the beginner pop up. There is paddle, stop, and push.

Chapter Six

How to Catch Foam Waves

Catching waves is the real fun of surfing and something practiced forever. Foam waves mostly look the same and real waves can always look different. The basic techniques are recognizing where the wave will arrive, judging whether it is a good wave to ride, getting momentum before it hits the board, and then paddling hard to get in front of the wave.

Chapter Eight

Paddling

When catching waves, most beginners paddle with long slow strokes thinking the wave will push them. It will, but if they are going too slow, it will push the back of the board toward the beach and flip it.

Chapter Eleven

Surfer Etiquette and the Line Up

Once you move to real waves and maybe if you have paddled out to catch bigger foam waves, you have to pay attention to other surfers for everyone’s safety and enjoyment.

The surfer has the right of way on a wave when they are the closest to the apex or where the foam first comes over the lip on a breaking wave. All other surfers have to back down. The wave often breaks right and left so surfers can ride in both directions.

The Books are 18 chapters, and 7,500 words. It is the essence of a surf lesson and instructions you would receive in the Dry Land portion and in water instructions. Insights are the results of being a life-long surfer and teaching 350 new students a year for ten years.
