Learning Advanced Surfing Carves on Soft Tops

learning advanced carves on soft top boards

Beginners progress to Learning Advanced Surfing Carves on soft tops. The 8′ soft top can be a high performance board and not only catch big waves but do the basic advanced maneuvers. The board in the image is a short board, but the beginner starts in these small waves.

I often start surfers on their first carves riding foam waves to the beach. The basic execution of the carve is to first move the eyes in the direction of the turn. Then rotate the head, shoulders, and arms in that direction. This brings torque down the body to the feet. Create slight pressure on the toes or heels on the side of the carve.

Learning to Carve in Foam Rides to the Beach

The beginner can practice going right and left and then both. If the surfer pumps a few times to get in front of the foam, he could carve down the line of foam as if he were in a barrel. Torque and pressures have to be easy because the board is thick and the speed is slow.

Once the surfer is catching real waves, he can learn the bottom turn, acceleration, and cut back. The bottom turn is the same as above. The surfer carves right or left into the pocket using the same technique. The cut back reverses direction to get back to the power of the wave. While riding in the pocket, the surfer looks down the face and carves toward the bottom and then back to the foam coming over the lip.

Learning to Accelerate

Accelerating is for speed to get ahead of the falling lip and to more easily perform maneuvers. The surfer pushes the nose of the board up and down the face with his front foot. Two or three times will get him moving and ready for a trick.

The first major surfers love is ripping the lip. The surfer bottom turns up the face and near the top does a cut back to get back down while spraying the lip with the tail of the board. This takes a lot of practice and you can see all the short boarders practicing this favorite maneuver.

Surfers start moving to shorter boards six inches at a time to learn how to handle less volume and get used to harder paddling. As boards get shorter, they lose float and paddling is more difficult. Be patient and grow into each board before moving shorter.
