Getting Fit to Surf
Getting Fit to Surf if you are already not in good surf shape is good for all recreation and improved life style. Surfing is a full body sport and not many activities involve full body muscles and cardiovascular like surfing.
Surfing needs upper body, core, and lower body strength. The amount of strength is a function of the surfers weight in one perspective. An overweight person needs much more strength to achieve a pop up. Cardiovascular development means longer surf sessions. Paddling is like intervals in aerobics.
Exercising Specific Surf Muscles
Surf specific muscles can be developed with a few main exercises. Push ups, squats, and weights or cables can all improve surfing pop ups. I like push ups, squats without weights, and cables. The cables build paddle power. Squats develop flexibility in the hamstrings, buttocks and lower back.
Nothing improves paddling power and stamina like lots of paddling, but not everyone has the time to go surfing several times a week. 36 hours of not exercising in any sport begins a slow deterioration of stamina. A daily aerobic routine will pay off quickly if a surfer wants to advance to riding real waves. More paddling power is needed if a surfer wants to move to boards smaller than 8′ or 9′ soft tops.
Professional surfers train out of water more than in the water. They emphasize flexibility with yoga, stretching, and appropriate weights. Most surfers don’t need plyometrics, but advanced surfers need more power in their legs to drive the surfboard.
Losing Weight Helps All Surfers
Losing weight helps most surfers. A lean body requires less power and has better oxygen uptake for stamina. Less weight helps the pop up. Less weight will help smaller boards not sink, which requires more paddling power.
A routine of muscle building, gaining flexibility, and cardiovascular improvement are great for surfers who want to spend more time surfing and advancing.
