Surfing is a full body sport. It demands upper body, lower body, and core strength, plus flexibility and stamina. Anything to improve any of these demands makes you a better surfer. Being overweight makes it more difficult to get one’s body off the surfboard to stand up.

Engaging in a program to lose weight and gain fitness are good not only for surfing but for a happier lifestyle. Being fit allows you to engage in any recreations. You could just decide to take a hike or ride a bike and not die trying.

Losing weight should be a long term process to inculcate the new habits into a daily routine without suffering. Suffering leads to binging and relapse. Begin with eliminating addictions and bad foods. Slowly add healthier foods. After a while, the brain adapts to healthy and bland.

Get fit for surfing by adding exercises specifically suited for developing strength and flexibility. Add burpies, pushups, squats, deadlifts, and planks. Cable pulls for the upper body can improve paddling strength and stamina.

Yoga poses can improve flexibility. A great stretch for the buttocks is lifting a leg and holding the toes. Sitting tightens the hamstrings, buttocks, and lower back all of which are important in popping up on the surf board.

Do a little every day. Improve your diet, build strength, improve flexibility, and engage in aerobics to develop cardiovascular fitness. You will become a better surfer and have greater health.
