Carving on the Surfing Short Board

Carving on the Surfing Short Board is progress after intermediates are learning to drive real waves. It takes a while for the average person to reach this stage and it takes frequent trips to the water.

Carving is how the short boarders have fun in the pocket. Long boarders carve as well but their method is much different. Carving can begin on the 8′ soft top, but becomes more advanced with a lower volume board.

The Basic Carves on a Surfing Shortboard

There are three basic maneuvers on a short board that are the ground work for all the other maneuvers. The surfer starts with the bottom turn coming off the face of the wave to get into the pocket.

The bottom turn is executed, like most carves, by looking in the direction of the turn and rotating the upper torso in that direction. This torques the core and legs to put pressure on the feet, which pressure the surfboard. A bottom turn begins with the upper torso and winds up with pressure on the toes or heels on the side of the carve.

The cut back is usually the second maneuver learned. It reverses direction to get back to the power. The upper torso turns in the opposite direction of travel on the bottom side of the wave. The board carves a reverse. The surfer may then execute another cut back when he gets back to the lip or source of power.

The cut back is also used to rip the lip. The surfer accelerates in the pocket and carves a bottom turn up the face. Then at the top, he executes a cut back to go back down the wave. At the top, he is spraying foam.

Accelerating is the important middle step to get speed for maneuvers. After bottom turning off the face, the surfer moves the nose of the board up and down the wave with his front foot. Two or three pushes should be enough for each maneuver or trick. After finishing, the surfer accelerates two or three times before the next trick.
