Carving the Surfing Short Board

carving the surfing short board

As surfers progress, one of the new things they want to learn is Carving The Surfing Short Board. It takes a progression to ride the short board, but carving can be learned early on a soft top.

As the surfer rides a soft top in a foam wave to the beach, he can begin to practice carving. Riders of other types of boards know how to carve on snowboards and skateboards, but the surfboard is a little different.

Carving Starts with Good Balance on the Board

The surfer has to be in a balanced position with hips and shoulders square to the front like pushing a tall box. The hands are against the box, the feet are apart, and the hips and shoulders are square to the front. The surfer with left foot forward wanting to carve right turns his upper torso to the right and places subtle pressure on the toes. The board will glide right.

To carve left, the surfer leads with the eyes as he turns his upper torso and places pressure on his heels and the board will glide right. Especially on the backside carve the surfer has to be sure not to drop the butt over the rail in foam waves, but to only move the upper torso.

Maneuvers and Tricks Begin with a Carve

The carve is used for several maneuvers. On a real wave the surfer does a bottom turn to get into the pocket. He rides down the face and like the explanation above he carves face side or back side to get into the pocket. To do a cut back, which he does to get back to the power of the wave, he turns his upper torso down the wave and places pressure on the toes or heels closest tot he bottom of the wave and reverses direction.

To rip the lip, the surfer does a bottom turn up the face and then a cut back to spray the lip with the tail of the board and ride to the bottom of the wave. Most maneuvers begin with these two carves, bottom turns and cut backs.

Taking it to a Short Board

On a short board, the rails are thin and the surfer is able to get a sharper carve by digging the rail deeper in the water. A soft top is great for learning all the tricks, but cannot dig a rail or carve as sharp as the lower volume short board.

The third maneuver a surfer learns in riding real waves is accelerating. The surfer especially on sand bar beaches with steep faces, must get ahead of the falling lip. He accelerates by pushing the nose of the board up and down the face with his front foot. After a few pumps, he can begin his maneuver or trick. After the trick, he pumps again to get speed for the next trick.
