How Many Lessons for Beginner Surfers to Be Good?

how many surf lessons to be good

I often get the question of How Many Lessons for Beginners Surfers to Be Good. This is dependent on so many factors. Almost like how many lessons for a person who hasn’t played football to be a good quarterback.

Surfing is physically demanding so people who are active, have strength, flexibility, stamina, and are normal weight have a big advantage. Take points away for any shortcomings on this list. Beginners often find they need to get in better shape or lose weight and they can start on a program that benefits their quality of life as well as becoming a better surfer.

Getting Started with the First Lesson

The first lesson acquaints people with the techniques for a beginner to catch and ride foam waves close to the beach. There is no drowning. People don’t get hurt. They learn timing and rhythm of waves, doing a pop up and riding. Most people can get this accomplished even if their form is not yet perfected.

The second lesson works on perfecting the form. The person is fresh and can start where they left off. The changes necessary are smaller. Often in this lesson a person can start paddling out to catch bigger foam waves.

In the third lesson, the student is paddling out and turning around to catch bigger foam waves and get longer rides to the beach. This determines if the form is perfected. A person becomes familiar with the waves and starts selecting the waves to ride and the ones to let pass.

Time to Start Catching Small Real Waves

In the fourth lesson, a student may be trying to catch small real waves while also catching foam waves. Real waves use the same techniques but the student has to learn new timing. The real wave is only open for a few seconds and the surfer has to be in position. It is also a little scary at first so the student has to maintain poise and still execute the techniques.

In the fifth lesson, the student can be paddling our further and trying for bigger real waves. Real waves are caught with three or four techniques. The surfer can catch them at the corners where they are smaller. The surfer can ride down the face. The surfer can catch the wave and then push the nose of the board toward the pocket before doing a pop up or point the board toward the pocket before catching the wave and popping up.

After that or during the process, the student could be practicing on their own. Lessons are great for a vacation where the student can take lessons every day and advance quickly. When lessons are finished a student then wants to ride real waves and drive the pocket. After a while he learns the various maneuvers for progressing to an advanced surfer.

I do have packages for new students to save money with more than one lesson.
