Many people that think surfing could be fun wonder Can Everybody Surf? The quick answer is that most people could surf but not everybody on the first time out. Most students are surfing on the first lesson, but many need more work to get in shape.

Surfing is technical and physically demanding. People who are overweight and have not been physically active (sedentary) are going to find the physical demands and learning difficult. Surfing requires strength, flexibility, stamina, capability of learning physical movements, and courage.

Surf Conditioning Can Be Built Gradually

Not everything has to be at peak in the first lessons which start in waist deep water riding foam waves a short distance to the beach. The act of catching a wave needs some upper body strength to paddle. The act of standing up needs upper body and lower body strength with flexibility. To ride for an hour requires some stamina. Little courage is necessary for a beginner.

The beginner learns to spot the right foam wave, roll over correctly on the board, paddle easy and then paddle hard to get in front of the wave. He places his hands on the board and pushes up. As he pushes up, he places a foot flat on the board under his butt so he can stand on it. This is where people that are overweight, not flexible, and without the lower body strength to lift their body with one leg for a few seconds run into trouble.

The three main solutions are lose weight, do push ups, do squats. Stamina can be built with walking at first leading to an hour a day or jogging, biking, swimming, treadmill, or hiking. Engaging all the exercises at once help develop surfing capability.

My book the 3 Week Plan is a good starter guide to get into surf shape. A surfer is not in shape in 3 weeks, but by then they should have developed a routine that has improved their condition and will lead to greater surf shape.
