Many clients start off asking Are Adults Fit to Surf. A mom seeking a surf lesson for her child when asked why she doesn’t join her said, I have had three kids. I said I have moms from Utah with 5+ kids that surf great along with their kids.

Age is more functional than chronological. Moms spend a lot of time moving and picking things up as well as twisting and lifting. Dads can be more sedentary if they have office or now screen jobs. Staying active is the key to more activities.

How Adults Get Fit to Surf

One of the post pandemic problems with people putting on weight is they have stopped exercising. Being locked down stopped many from visiting the gym for weights and cardio and even yoga.

Time to get back to movement. Surfing is a full body sport. We need strength, flexibility, and stamina. Nutrition should be included to bring down weight and feed muscles. See my newest book, Get Fit to Surf on Amazon.

I often ask students if they can touch their palms to the ground without bending their knees. We get tight hamstrings, buttocks, and lower backs from sitting. Surfing needs flexibility to do the pop up off the surfboard. It is a coiling movement that requires the stretched muscles.

Surfing also has a weight to power ratio. Do you have the strength to lift your weight off the surfboard. Gaining weight wouldn’t be the problem if exercising was continued. Gaining weight and not muscle creates the gap.

Building surf specific muscles and flexibility while losing weight can be a perfect combination. If you have the capability to surf, you can engage in most any recreation. Every exercise in which you engage will help your surfing capability. Best students have been in gymnastics, yoga, and some cardio activities.

Weight lifting is great and it should be complemented by a cardio activity. Cardio can be walking a half hour a day, biking, swimming, or treadmills. The aerobics is more effective if they include interval training. Intervals raise the heartbeat for a minute or two. These are the most effective way to build cardiovascular and burn calories.

Try doing a pop up on your living room floor. Lay down, pretend you are paddling, then push up and put your back foot flat under your butt and stand on it. Yes, you are standing on one leg for a second. Then move your other foot in front of your body and assume a stable stance. Doing pop ups in your living room is a great way to prepare for your first surfing lesson.
