Surfing is a great connection. It connects people to Nature through the ocean. It connects people to their bodies as they learn their capabilities. It makes people think about their physical condition in relationship to challenging Nature and their environment.

Surfing takes everyone out of their comfort zone. Learning to face challenges is a life changing characteristic. Life is safe behind a screen, but gets real when facing ocean waves. Many are intimidated when they start, but soon learn to feel comfort in the ocean.

Surfing is a good check on your physical conditioning. I have rarely heard someone say this is easy or its not as much work as I anticipated. Even ocean swimmers, runners, and triathletes say they need to get in better shape after a surf lesson.

Surfing is more technical than people expect. It requires a good connection between the brain and the body. People who don’t learn well with their bodies have difficulty. There is a sequence that has to be followed to ride a surfboard. Many can’t get their body to follow the sequence they learn to say out loud.

If ever there was a reality check on the disadvantages of being over weight, surfing is it. These pandemic days have had people locked down and they have let their fitness wane. Too much comfort food while spending too much screen time needs to change for people to get healthy.

Teenagers can feel part of a great culture. Millions around the world enjoy surfing and it comes with a cool vibe, appreciation of the ocean, and some fun clothes. People feel very cool walking to the beach with a surfboard. Lots of self-esteem in doing well.

Connecting to Nature in a healthy environment that demands physical fitness is a great path to complement any life. It is an outside source of confidence that challenges can be met. It is an outside source of calm that regardless of what happens in the world, the ocean is accepting.
