Surfers Get Lean because of physical exercise but also because they become more conscious of good health. Surfing is physically demanding and then it becomes spiritually rewarding.

When a surfer feels a connection to the ocean, he also realizes his place in the oneness of everything. His body is Nature just as the Ocean is Nature. Taking care of the ocean, one’s body, and one’s spiritual life become part of culture.

Surfers Get Lean Because of their Behaviors

It is difficult to get lean just because of exercise. The body’s metabolism adjusts to the strain of physical activity and will move its focus to exercise and off other activities. This may mean stress and inflammation get less attention, which is a good thing.

As the metabolism adjusts to the level of physical activity, the diet has to also be monitored. More exercise does not mean eating can be a free for all. It is amazing how many athletes are now having plant based diets. A plant based diet means less bad fat, mostly pure sugars, and plenty of plant based protein.

One of the positive reasons for leanness in surfing is that as the surfer gains stamina from engaging, he can exercise longer thereby burning more calories. When muscles have used all the glucose in the liver, muscles, and blood stream (about 900 calories of carbs) the muscles will burn fat for fuel and use fat for building more muscle in recovery.

The surfer identifies with health. He knows better health means better performance. He also identifies with health as a priority in his lifestyle. Its who he is. In that our life is a gift of Nature, we are obligated to take care of our bodies, our spirit, and our environment. We know eating bad food is a violation of all the above.
