Surfing is certainly easier for lean people but some people want to know How Overweight People Get Fit to Surf. In gaining weight, most have stop exercising and stretching meaning they lose strength and flexibility.

Strength in surfing is needed first to paddle to catch waves. Then the surfer pushes his upper body off the board in a push up. Then the surfer puts one foot flat on the board under his butt so he can stand on that foot and lift his hands and upper torso off the board.

Weight Can Be a Surfing Liability

Having a lot of weight makes it difficult to get the back foot flat on the board. Being overweight makes it difficult to stand on one foot for a few seconds and lift the upper torso off the board. Surfers call it power to weigh ratio. Do you have the strength to lift your weight off the board.

The overweight person has to lose weight while building strength and flexibility. The best strength and flexibility exercises are push ups and squats. Push ups build the upper body and squats loosen the hamstrings, buttocks and lower back. Bend over and place the hands behind the ankles and pull the head down. Can you feel the tightness in your buttocks?

Losing weight can actually be fun after the first month. It takes that long on a calorie restricted diet to lose the cravings. Bad foods must be eliminated first. Substitute good foods. You can do it one item at a time. Drink lots of water. Lyn Genet-Recitas suggests drinking half your body weight in ounces meaning a 200 pound person drinks 100 oz of water.
