Many beginning surfers think after their first lesson they know why surfers get lean. Surfing is a lot of full body exercise. An hour an a half lesson has most people near their limits. The great thing is they had fun the whole time and wish they could last longer.

This is part of the incentive that drives surfers to get more fit and also starts trimming fat as they keep surfing until they are tired/exhausted. There is the continuous drive to ride waves better and conquer this phenomena. The pride of accomplishment is unlimited.

The Basics of Getting Fit to Surf

Getting fit has some important components. One engages in exercise that requires muscle and cardiovascular effort. Beginners can start with exercises that don’t strain muscles but require engagement for long periods of time. This starts to build one of three different types of muscle fiber and starts to improve cardiovascular conditioning.

One goal of exercise is to build muscle receptors to glucose. As fitness improves, muscle can store more glucose and therefore last longer before failing. When marathoners hit the wall, they have run out of carbohydrates in their muscles. This is why top athletes train their bodies to burn fat for fuel.

Surfing is all about paddling. Paddling is like swimming. The more you train the longer you can swim. The longer you can paddle, the more muscle you are building and the more endurance you create. After muscle has used the carbohydrate stored, it will seek fat for fuel. Fat is better fuel than carbs.

Surfers not only surf for conditioning, buy the more ambitious ones cross-train. They will work out with weights and engage in aerobics for cardiovascular development. As they improve their conditioning, they can improve the amount of stress they place on their muscles. Muscles are then using more fat for fuel.

Without properly feeding the muscles, they will even start eating themselves for fuel. A good nutrition program supplies the necessary carbohydrates and protein to provide the muscles with the right fuel. When exercising and eating properly, the body will start to release the bad fat and store the good fat you are consuming. Your waistline starts to get thinner. Your clothes fit better.
