The Best Way for Beginners to Catch Real Waves
A fun time in learning to surf is moving from foam waves to real waves. On sand bar beaches there is a Best Way for Beginners to Catch Real Waves.
Foam waves can be seen for a long way as real waves break and foam waves roll to the beach. The surfer gets in front of them and paddles to catch them. Once the surfer starts paddling out, the best process is to turn 45 degrees after a foam wave passes and wait for the next foam wave. When it is close, turn the other 45 degree wave.
This Technique Works for Sand Bottom Beaches
On sand bottom beaches, the real waves often reform and go from foam to real to foam again. The beginner can try to time these real waves that are only a few feet tall and catch them. When the real wave is only a few feet tall, it doesn’t have much power so the surfer may have to paddle 8 to 10 times to get in front of it.
After riding down a few small faces, the beginner will find the best way to catch them is to hunt or patrol for them. The surfer paddles out and instead of making a 90 turn to wait for waves or paddling out until he sees a real wave and trying to execute a 180 turn back to the beach, he does something else.
The surfer paddles through the foam waves into the area where he has been seeing real waves reform. He makes an arc paddling parallel to the waves and keeps moving. Now when he sees a real wave forming he decides whether he has to go out a little, keep going parallel, or go in a little to catch it. The advantage is now he is moving and it is much easier to get to that fast breaking real wave.
Hunt for Waves and Be Moving
The surfer paddles back and forth and out and it looking for the real wave to form. He can also catch good foam waves. Some days real waves are forming and some days they are not. It might depend on the wind.
He can now move up to bigger real waves and catch them the same way. He can paddle along parallel to the waves and look for the pocket that forms. He paddles toward the pocket and when it rolls under him, he pops up and rides it towards the beach. He maintains that 45 degree angle toward the beach because as a pocket rolls, it gets closer to the beach.
Now the surfer can also try catching bigger faces. He can ride down the face or after he catches the wave, push the nose of the board toward the pocket and then pop up. This prevents pearling and gets the surfer quickly ahead of the falling lip which is faster on sand bar beaches.
