Beginner Surfers Get Fit to Ride Real Waves with surf specific exercises and training. There are many things surfers need to progress in a very physical and technical sport. It looks so easy in film, but new entrants soon find that is an illusion.

Surfing is physically demanding, very technical for the beginner, and requires expansive knowledge and judgment about the ocean. Advanced surfers become experts on wave action, ocean bottoms, and riding waves as well as all the technical skills needed to do so.

The Importance of Surfing Fitness

Being surf fit has to be a given in advancing to ride real waves. There is a jump in physical demands between rolling over on a surfboard to catch foam waves and paddling out to catch real waves. The surfer learns that the difference in stamina required is similar to running 10Ks and running a marathon.

Part of catching waves is mastering the popup. This is an exercise in itself that is crucial. It requires upper and lower body strength, plus core strength, and flexibility. Depending on where you start with your fitness, you may need lots of exercises to improve popups for bigger waves. The start is pushups, squats, and dead lifts for strength and flexibility.

Paddling is Key

Paddling is the core element of longer surf sessions. The best way to build paddling stamina is paddling. Those who can’t visit the ocean a few times a week can work on building the relevant muscles and stamina with weights and aerobics.

Surfers are strong and lean. The muscle helps them paddle when they are tired. The lean makes paddling easier because they are not sinking the surfboard, have better oxygen uptake, and have less weight to push and pop up.

The surfer focuses on skills necessary to advance and should include an equal amount of emphasis on getting stronger to make the techniques achievable. It is man against or with Nature. Nature is delivering the power and man is utilizing it for his own experience.
