Learning Surf Carves

learning surf carves

Many new beginner surfers who have other board experiences love Learning Surf Carves. Going straight to the beach is how every one starts in foam waves.

Once surfers have mastered catching foam waves, executing the pop up, and riding straight to the beach, they can learn the beginning carves. The surfer riding shoulders and hips squared to the beach and with the left foot forward (regular) turns his torso slightly right and puts pressure on his toes to turn face side (right). To turn backside, (left), he turns his upper torso left and puts pressure on his heels.

Advancing the Carves

This will lead to bottom turns and cut backs. When the surfer paddles out to catch bigger foam waves and small real waves, he can practice these two maneuvers. On the back side it is important not to lean the whole body into the carve or the surfer will fall off the butt side of the board; only the upper body.

Once surfers start catching real waves down the face, the first carve is a bottom turn into the pocket. The surfer executes just as explained above to go face side or back side. Once in the pocket, the surfer wants to accelerate to get ahead of the falling lip which he does by moving the board up and down the face of the wave with his front foot. Two or three is enough before each trick.

Making Carves in the Pocket

Once moving down the pocket, the surfer can execute a cut back by carving down the face of the wave with a front side or back side carve. It depends on which foot is forward and which direction the surfer is traveling. When the surfer has reversed direction and is back at the power of the wave, he can execute another cut back and get back into the power of the wave.

In the pocket the surfer may want to execute a snap (ripping the lip) and executes a bottom turn up the face and then a cut back at the top to go back down the face. He might spray the lip with the tail of the board. Some surfers like to get the tail out of the water at the top.

Other tricks like 360’s and aerials begin with a bottom turn up the face of the wave. On a soft top board, the rails are thick and the board can catch a rail with too much pressure and not enough speed. On soft top boards, the rails are thin and designed for digging in deep to execute sharp carves. Long boards don’t carve. Turns are executed with a different maneuver.
