How Long for Beginner Surfers to Ride Real Waves

beginner surfers learn to ride real waves

When many surfers learn, they are drawn by the short boarders who are ripping real waves. They wonder how long it takes for beginners to ride real waves. It depends.

Surfing is a full body sport and requires some basics to learn and progress. It favors the lean. Overweight surfers have generally lost flexibility and strength in not exercising. It requires stamina because surfing is all about paddling.

Getting in Surf Shape

The best warm ups for beginners are squats and dead lifts to create flexibility and strength in their legs and hamstrings, buttocks and lower back. Pushups will supply a lot of the strength needed for the pop up. Paddling is the best stamina builder for paddling.

The beginner starts riding foam waves to the beach. Then they learn to paddle through the foam waves to the bigger foam waves. After 4 or 5 trips to the water, most can start riding small real waves in the 2′ to 3′ size.

Beginners learn to go down the face of small waves. Then when waves get bigger they learn to point the nose to the pocket after they catch the wave. This keeps them from pearling. A great way to get into real waves is catch them at the corners.

Learning About Waves

Waves break at the apex where the foam first comes over the lip. This is the steepest part and the most power. As the wave rolls out in the pocket, the power slackens. This is a good point for a beginner to jump on. He paddles parallel to the wave at a 45 degree angle to the beach. As it rolls under him, he pops up and continues his angle to the beach.

Courage is needed in addition to skills to ride real waves. The beginning usually involves lots of pearling and crashes. Bigger waves have speed and weight. The surfer will experience getting pushed under water and maybe some under water somersaulting as the wave rolls your body toward the beach.

Beginners learn how to fall off on real waves. At first there will be a lot of face smacks. Then the surfer starts to see it coming and learns to cannonball or drop straight in feet first. Beginners have to learn never to let their board get sideways to the wave and let the wave grab the rails as it results in the worst tumble.

Learning to ride real waves has lots of initiation points that are soon learned and riding becomes safe and more predictable.
