Carving on the Surfing Shortboard

carving on the surfing shortboard

Many intermediates who learn to ride real waves have to learn Carving on the Surfing Shortboard. Surfing progress is slow and is learned one day at a time.

Carving is the next step after learning to ride real waves down the face. The surfer has to get into the pocket and reverse direction to regain power of the wave and accelerate to do tricks and more maneuvers.

The surfer must have the proper stance on the surfboard to control the carves. Many surfers pop up with their butts over one rail and fall off before they can carve. The surfboard is designed to have weight equal on both sides of the center stringer. This means hips and shoulders are square to the front and the stringer line divides the body evenly.

Executing the Carves

With the body square over the center line, the surfer carves by first turning his eyes in the direction of the carve. He moves his upper torso at the same time is a small twist torquing down his body. His toes or heels on the side of the carve direction place a little pressure on the surfboard.

This action translates to the rail of the surfboard causing it to dig into the wave. It is important to torque the feet without turning the whole body causing a fall off the side. On deep carves, the surfer gets low and drags a hand in the water so he knows where the pocket is.

These carves are bottom turns. They are used to get into the wave after surfing down the face or carving up the face while in the pocket to do a trick or escape over the back of the wave. For ripping the lip, the surfer first does a bottom turn at the bottom and then a cut back at the top.

The cut back is a carve to reverse direction. The surfer turns his eyes and then his upper torso in the direction he wants to travel. Then he torques and places pressure on his toes or heels. If the surfer is in the pocket and wants to cut back to the power of the wave, he is going to carve down the face of the wave.

The final important maneuver is accelerating. The surfer moves the nose of the surfboard up and down the face with his front foot to get two or three pumps to increase speed. Speed makes maneuvers and carves easier. He pumps after carving into the pocket and after each trick or maneuver when he returns to the pocke.t
