How Fast to Surf the Short Board

how fast to become a short board surfer

Young surfers are often attracted to surfing because the first see surfers in film. They want to know How Fast they Can Get to Surfing the Short Board. It is certainly like most sports a function of how much time can be invested.

Surfing is also a compilation of skills, conditioning, and courage. If beginners started by swimming out to real waves and getting thrashed a number of times, their enthusiasm would be curved. It is more fun if surfers progress from basic fundamentals to the advanced skills of riding a short board.

The Process of Becoming a Better Surfer

In that process, surfers will learn how to read and catch waves starting with foam. They will learn how to do pop ups into the correct stance. They will develop surf specific muscles for paddling. They will gain courage as their competence and confidence increase. They all take time. Time can be condensed if a surfer goes into the water every day.

The surfer starts with riding a soft top board in foam waves. He learns how to select good foam waves and how to paddle so the board shoots in front of the wave. He learns the timing and rhythm of catching the wave before putting his hands on the board. Then he must proceed in a sequential manner of placing hands, pushing up, putting a foot on the board, standing on it to lift the hands off the board, and then placing the front foot on the board.

Watching beginners who have not taken a lesson or learned the sequence is to see just a quick explosion of bad timing and moves resulting in a crash. As a surfer who has learned the basics progresses, he catches bigger foam waves and then begins with small real waves. The small real waves introduces him to the timing and feel of a real wave.

Moving to Real Waves that Short Boards Ride

Progressing to bigger real waves while still on the short board teaches him better timing and new skills. He starts to develop more courage if he isn’t being thrashed on each wave. After learning basic maneuvers like bottom turns, cut backs, and accelerating, he can move to a hard board that is slightly shorter than the soft top while still maintaining good width and thickness.

The steps to a short board (6’10”) takes time to develop the ability to handle the more difficult paddling with the loss of volume and more difficult wave catching with loss of volume and more difficult riding because the boards get increasingly sensitive to skills as they lose size.

A process of getting into the water a few times a week could take a surfer a year to get from 8′ soft top to short board. In the process, the surfer is having fun, learning skills, improving conditioning, and gaining courage. All are important to be an advanced surfer.
