Feeling the Surfboard with Your Feet
Beginner surfers want to improve and they learn Feeling the Surfboard with Their Feet. Many beginners learning to ride foam waves pop up with locked knees and can’t balance for long before the board changes direction or hits a bump and throws them off.
The pop up for beginners and advanced surfers is a little different but lands both in the same stance. The feet should be shoulder width apart (3′), the front foot in the middle of the board at a 45 degree angle forward, knees flexed, the hips and shoulders square to the beach. I tell students its the “pushing the box” posture. Imagine pushing a tall box 10′. Hands in front on the box.
The Key for Advancing
The key for advancement and especially for moving to shorter boards is feel the board with the feet as soon as you execute the pop up. Then you can control the direction and absorb the bounces. As boards get shorter they can feel more twitchy. The surfer has to get control with his feet as soon as he pops up to control the direction.
From the push the box stance, the surfer can easily carve. To carve right, he turns his eyes then upper torso in the direction of the turn and then the torque runs down his body to his feet where he places a little pressure on his toes or heels. This is the sequence for bottom turns, cut backs, and ripping the lip. The body works to torque the feet which control the surfboard.
