Families Can Learn Surfing Together

Families can learn surfing together because lessons begin in shallow water and everyone is in the same spot. Kids are often faster learners than parents and sometimes moms outshine everyone.

The great aspect is no one gets left behind. The gradual phases of learning between getting comfortable in the ocean to catching waves place everyone in a position to practice together on days following the lesson.

Learning the Basics

The first objective is for everyone to get comfortable in the ocean. Lessons start with a dry land portion to acquaint everyone with the techniques that will be practiced in the water. Then new students are pushed into foam waves at the beginning.

While riding the foam waves, new students are coached on proper techniques and correcting mistakes. Soon new students are paddling for their own waves and once again go through coaching to correct mistakes.

Timing is Everything

New students have to learn when to roll onto the surfboard and start paddling for a wave. They learn how long to paddle before putting their hands on the surfboard. Then they go through a timed sequence for standing on the surf board.

Patience, poise, and execution are about timing and learning the sequence. Many students are up and riding on the first wave. Those who listen and follow the instructions are advancing quickly.

Physical Conditioning for Surfing

Three physical aspects help learning to surf. Flexibility, upper body strength, and stamina are all in demand. The beginner pop up uses the legs to pop up instead of the upper body, so most new students can execute it. Flexibility is important in the hamstrings, buttocks and lower back. Those who spend a lot of time sitting and not exercising might need to stretch.

Surfing stamina is required for paddling. Most new students can last an hour. Any aerobic exercises that create higher levels of heart beat are good. Quick recovery is a benefit of aerobic fitness and since surfing is about fast paddling to catch a wave, recovery is important.
