Beginner Surfers Get Fit for Surfing
Beginner Surfers Get Fit for Surfing to enable learning and progress. Surfing is physical and has some demands even for beginners.
One of the areas beginners lack most is flexibility. It takes flexibility to get the feet under the body to stand up on the surfboard. A lack of flexibility makes it very difficult to stand on the surfboard. This is the first item to work.
Mastering the Popup
In the beginner pop up, the surfer catches a wave, then puts his hands on the board in a man’s push up position. Then he pushes and moves a foot about three feet from the tail and places it flat under his butt. He then stands up on that foot/leg as he raises his hands and moves the other foot to the front of the board.
The problem with not getting the foot flat is the surfer can’t stand if only the ball of the foot is on the board. This forces him to put the other foot on the board while he still has his hands on the board. This causes him to fly off the front because his head is in front of his feet and his arms are blocking the progress of the front foot going to the nose.
Flexibility is Key
The first exercises for flexibility are squats and dead lifts. They can be done without weights. Do 3 of each every morning and in 3 weeks there should be a noticeable difference in flexibility. Add weights if possible to build strength in the legs and lower back. These exercises effect a lot of muscle groups.
The next problem beginners face, especially if they are overweight, is getting both their chest off the board in the pushup and standing on the rear leg lifting their entire weight. Pushups are the natural remedy for upper body surfing strength. Squats are the answer for lower body leg strength.
Building Stamina
Stamina is the next area important to help surfers last for a lesson or longer sessions. The paddling for surfing is the tiring part. In lessons, the students will paddle for 30 or 40 waves. In this process they are learning to stand up and then they walk back out to the waves. When they progress, they paddle through the waves and turn around to catch a bigger wave.
Students immediately remark how tiring paddling is. This process is assisted with any aerobic activities which could be stationary bike, treadmill, running, biking, swimming or aerobics class. Aerobics increase the muscles capacity for glucose which is the fuel for effort and recovery. It takes time to build cardiovascular capability and should become a habit that lasts a lifetime.
Losing weight improves surfing if you are overweight. There is a power to weight ratio surfers discuss which is the power to lift your weight off the surfboard. As you build strength and reduce weight the popups and surfing become easier. It is like a runner building oxygen uptake capacity.
My books The 3 Week Plan or Get Fit to Surf both cover this process in more detail (below). Getting into a routine of healthy eating and exercise improves your lifestyle as it makes you more recreation ready and surf fit.
