Adults Learn to Surf

Adult surfers can learn to surf and enjoy it as recreation and exercise. It is helpful if adults have been active. Surfing is physically demanding. It is helpful if the adult engages in aerobics, upper body strength training, and is flexible.

The flexibility and upper body strength are helpful in popping up from a lying down position on the board. Preparation would include burpies, push ups, gym work, or practicing the pop up which can be seen on my video. Then include some stretching so you can put your palms on the floor without bending your knees.

Basic Techniques

In the dry land lesson, the adult surfer learns how to roll over on the board and practice the pop up. Everything is covered in the water again as needed. Learning is a slow process but most students are riding in the first lesson.

The beginner pop up is a count. The surfer paddles, puts their hands next to their chest in a man’s push up position, pushes up, puts a rear foot flat on the board, rises as he moves the other foot to the front of the board.

The right posture is to have the feet shoulder width apart. Weight should be equal on the front and back leg. The surfers upper torso should be right above the legs and not leaning forward over the front foot. The hips and shoulders have to be square to the front and the hands in front of the body.

Catching Foam Waves

The adult surfer begins in shallow water where the foam wave is close to shore. He rolls over on the board when the wave is 20 feet away and starts paddling easy. Then the surfer looks back to see the wave and when it is 5 feet away, starts paddling hard.

After the board is in front of the wave, the surfer puts his hands on the board and executes the pop up sequence. Speed on the pop up is not as important as smoothness and including each step.

Once the adult surfer is up and in the right posture, they should try to ride straight to the beach without falling off. Frequent practice helps progress.
