Adults Can Be Good Surfers

Adults can be good surfers by learning the techniques and practicing on a regular basis. It is helpful if adults have been active so that they have good upper body strength, flexibility, and some aerobic capability.

The biggest hindrance for adults is flexibility. They should be able to touch the floor with their fingers or palms. The hamstrings, buttocks, and lower back get stiff with too much sitting.

Learning the Techniques

There is a sequence for catching a foam wave and riding to the beach. The surfer paddles to catch the wave, performs a pop up and rides in the right posture. Timing is important. There is no need to rush.

The surfer paddles as the foam wave approaches the board. He then paddles hard as the foam wave hits the tail to get in front of the wave. Then he does the pop up sequence into the right posture on the board.

The beginner pop up begins with the surfer placing his hands on the board next to his chest in a man’s push up position. Then he pushes as he puts his back foot flat on the board under his butt. He stands on that leg as he raises his hands and moves the front foot to the nose.

The right posture is feet shoulder width apart. Hips and shoulders facing square to the front with both hands in front of the face. The knees are flexed. If the posture is correct, the surfer will ride straight to the beach with no extra work required.

Preparation

The adult can prepare with some stretching, push ups and cardio activity. All three are important to execute the surf techniques and to have the stamina to practice.

Beginners start in foam waves near the beach and after mastering the fundamentals can venture out to bigger waves as courage permits. Bigger waves move faster and are heavier so falls will be more punishing.

The soft top board beginners use can last adults a long time. Surfers ride big real waves on soft top boards and they are more forgiving for beginners. Have fun, be safe.
