Adults Get Fit to Surf: Flexibility, Strength and Stamina!

our mission in Oceanside surf lessons

Are you an adult looking to dive into the exhilarating world of surfing but wondering how to get your body surf-ready?

You’re not alone! Many adults feel the call of the waves but need a little prep before hitting the beach. At our surf school, we believe that getting fit to surf involves enhancing your flexibility, strength, aerobic capacity, and stamina.

Here’s how you can gear up for an incredible surfing experience.

Flexibility Is Key

Before you can pop up on a board and ride the waves, you need a limber body. Flexibility helps in preventing injuries and allows you to perform better on your surfboard.

Simple daily stretches focusing on your legs, back, and shoulders can make a big difference. Incorporating yoga into your routine is also a fantastic way to improve your flexibility. Not only does it help stretch those crucial muscles, but it also enhances your balance and core stability, which are essential for surfing.

Build That Strength

Strength is crucial, especially when it comes to paddling out and controlling your surfboard in the water. Targeted exercises that strengthen your upper body, core, and legs will significantly boost your surfing performance.

Simple bodyweight exercises such as push-ups, planks, and squats can be done at home and are great for building muscle strength. As you progress, incorporating some weight training can further enhance your power and endurance in the water.

Don’t Forget Aerobics

Surfing is a high-energy sport that requires good cardiovascular health. Aerobic exercises like swimming, cycling, or even brisk walking can increase your endurance, making those long sessions in the water much more manageable.

Try to include some form of aerobic activity in your fitness routine about three to four times a week. Swimming is particularly beneficial for surfers as it uses many of the same muscle groups and improves your breath control.

Stamina for Those Waves

Lastly, stamina plays a vital role in how long and how hard you can surf. Building your stamina through regular aerobic workouts and extended surf sessions will help you spend more time doing what you love—surfing!

Gradually increase the intensity and duration of your workouts to challenge your body and boost your stamina. Remember, the more you surf, the better your endurance will become, so get out there as much as possible.

Getting fit to surf isn’t just about the physical benefits; it’s about making your time on the water enjoyable and rewarding. At our surf school, we provide structured fitness programs designed specifically for surfers.

Whether you’re just starting out or you’re looking to improve your surfing fitness, we’re here to help you achieve your goals.
