The Basics of Getting in Shape to Surf
I have been a surf instructor for 11 years and a life long surfer. I am also a Certified Health Coach and completed Personal Training and Nutrition courses. The pandemic era has created more people that are overweight due to being locked down. More of them are coming to the Ocean to find a fun recreation that is safe and good exercise.
Three things are important for learning to surf. Surfers need strength, flexibility, and stamina. Surfers often talk about the power to weight ratio. It is the ability to lift your weight off the surfboard to stand up. A lot of overweight people have strength and flexibility and can surf. The biggest problem is that as people gain weight, they have stopped exercising.
Getting into shape to surf might by a lifestyle change that affects everything in one’s life. If you can surf, you can do a lot of different physical activities. Surfing might be a good goal and a final test after beginning a lifestyle changing regimen. One can have different dreams such as hiking, dancing, swimming, bike riding, or playing sports.
Getting in surf shape can begin with a program to build strength, improve aerobic stamina, and improve one’s nutrition. It can be simple to begin all three and one should have long-term goals and not try to accomplish everything in a month or set a goal of losing ten pounds now.
All changes may need consultation with a doctor to be sure you are capable of making changes. Building strength might begin with exercises without weights and progress to weights, machines, and free exercise. Stamina building can begin with walking 10 minutes a day and build to running distances. Nutrition can begin with first discovering your own eating habits and then deciding what to change.
This book explores how to begin. It discusses how to make progress. It describes the steps to move from beginner to advanced in physical fitness and surfing. Going through the process will begin showing results and the mind gets behind progress and is soon your best support.. Sometimes starting the path and seeing results creates addictions to health and fitness. Then life is a whole new adventure.
