Beginners Surf on First Day
Beginners surf on the first day when they learn the basic fundamentals and follow a simple process for popping up. Surfing is about timing and rhythm and beginner surfers learning on their own do not understand this idea.
The basic rhythm for beginners riding foam waves is to recognize a good wave. Roll over on the surfboard and start paddling. When the wave gets close, paddle hard as the wave hits the board for at least 3 paddles (3 sets of two paddles), the place hands on the board and execute a pop up.
If the timing was right and the pop up puts the surfer into the correct posture on the surfboard, the ride to the beach will be easy.
The Basics for Learning to Surf
Beginners should use a soft top board at least 8′ to 9′ long. The board makes the learning process easier. Beginners ride foam waves near the beach. When the foam wave approaches within 20′, the surfer rolls over onto the board so his feet are in the back and his body is in the middle of the board.
When the wave is about to hit the surfboard, the surfer paddles hard until he is in front of the wave. He feels the board take off and the nose comes up so the board is plaining level on smooth water.
Then the surfer places his hands on the board in a man’s push up position next to the chest, not in front of the shoulders or on the rails. Then the surfer pushes up and places his back foot on the board flat and under his butt.
The surfer rises and with hands in front of the body brings the front foot to the middle of the board near the nose. The shoulders and hips are square to the front with both hands in front so they can be seen. Weight is equal on front and back leg with torso upright.
At this point the surfer should be riding to the beach without doing any work or falling.
