The Basic Skills Needed by Beginner Surfers
There are some Basic Skills Needed by Beginner Surfers to be successful in their first lesson. Each of these can be developed over time for those who are determined and persist. Surfing is physically demanding, requires learning, and needs some courage.
Learning is the main obstacle for most beginner surfers who don’t get it the first time. In our lives of routine, we do the same things and often don’t challenge the brain to learn new things physically. The 14 year old should be an ideal surfer because they are often engaged in so many physical activities.
Fitness Includes Good Body Weight
Weight can be the second major obstacle for new surfers. If surfers are overweight, they have not been exercising and at the same time losing flexibility. Weight makes coordination more difficult. A program of weight loss makes a surfer more adept.
Strength is needed for paddling and standing up on the surf board. The most tiring thing about surfing is paddling. Not many people can swim for an hour because it is not common. Not only is paddling stamina handy, but strength in paddling is needed to catch waves.
Strength is an Important Factor in Pop Ups and Paddling
Strength is needed to lift the upper torso in the pop up and then strength is needed as the surfer puts all their weight on one foot for a few seconds to stand up. In the pop up, the surfer stands on one foot as he rises to lift his hands on the board and make room for the other foot to move in front of the body to the nose of the board.
Two great exercises to build strength and flexibility are pushups and squats. Pushups build upper body and core strength. Squats stretch the hamstrings, buttocks, and lower back. Any exercises that can build on these two areas is good. Then an aerobics program is needed for stamina.
Courage is needed to stand up on the board. Many people are afraid to stand up once moving toward the beach. After that, courage is needed to paddle out and start learning which waves are good to ride and avoiding waves that are not. Courage becomes an important factor to advance because waves are fast, heavy, and can be overwhelming. Building skills and strength help develop courage.
