How Beginner Surfers Learn to Ride Real Waves
Most new surfers want to know How Beginner Surfers Learn to Ride Real Waves. Most are attracted because they have seen film of surfers ripping real waves and want to experience that.
Riding real waves is an advanced form of surfing and there are degrees of advanced surfers. Beginner surfers can advance to riding real waves learning the basic skills and getting practice time in the water. Progress needs skills, conditioning, and courage.
Master Foam Waves First
Learning to master riding on foam waves is necessary. Beginners should start with a soft top board that is 8′ or 9′ long depending on their weight. Above 120 pounds, beginners should use a 9′ soft top. These boards can ride real waves .
After riding foam waves to the beach without falling off, the surfer can start paddling out to ride bigger foam waves. The surfer paddles out, turns around and catches a foam wave. Then the surfer learns to paddle out and paddle parallel to the foam waves and not turn 180 degrees toward shore that lets the wave hit the tail of the surfboard.
Paddle Parallel to Waves Hunting for Foam or Real Waves
Now the surfer is paddling parallel to the foam waves looking for the wave and then turning in a big arc as the wave approaches. In this maneuver, the surfer never loses sight of the wave and sees it as it gets close. Now the surfer starts looking for real waves that are mixed in with the foam waves. This happens especially on sand bar beaches like Oceanside, CA.
When the surfer spots these small 2′ to 3′ real waves, he decides whether he has to paddle out a little, keep parallel, or paddle in to let the wave hit the board in the tail. This is why he wants to be moving as he looks for waves. He can choose a real wave or continue to ride good foam waves.
Ride Small Waves Down the Face
The first waves will be ridden down the face. If the wave isn’t too steep, he can catch it at an angle while he heads toward the pocket. This keeps the board from pearling. He lets the wave roll under him as he faces the beach at a 45 degree angle and continues that angle. Catching a 2′ to 3′ wave down the face may require more paddling as they lack the power of a foam wave.
Once the surfer feels adept at small real waves, he can continue the same practice of patrolling for real waves out further near the line up of surfers. As he sees the wave form he turns to head for the beach and lets the real wave roll under the board and arc above his head. Then he paddles hard and pops up.
The real wave can be caught by riding down the face, turning the nose toward the pocket and then popping up, or catching the wave and then pushing the nose toward the pocket before popping up. Observing surfers might give an idea of the various ways to catch real waves.
