Beginner Surfers Learn to Catch Real Waves
It is a big thrill when beginner surfers move from catching foam waves and learn to catch real waves. It is a gradual process.
The beginner surfer can learn to catch foam waves by rolling over onto the surfboard as the foam wave approaches on a sand bar beach. He then paddles to catch it towards the beach. In this process he should master the timing and the pop up.
Learn the Fundamentals First
After the fundamentals have been learned he can paddle out through the foam waves to catch bigger foam waves by turning around and once again mastering the timing. The best process is to paddle through a wave, turn 90 degrees and wait for the next wave. Then turn 90 degrees toward the beach and catch the wave.
After practicing, the surfer can start paddling out and instead of making 180 degree turns to catch waves he should paddle in an arc so that he is always moving. He paddles parallel to the waves and as one approaches, he turns toward the beach watching the wave as he turns.
Real Waves Among the Foam Waves
Often there are real waves forming with the foam waves as they reform and break. In Oceanside, there are usually small real waves amongst the foam waves. The surfer see them and decides if he has to move out, paddle parallel, or paddle in to catch them. The real wave only stays open for a few seconds so the timing is more precise.
The surfer now can catch the real waves at an angle so as not to pearl. This is practice getting into the pocket. After the surfer can catch the real waves at an angle and down the face, he starts looking for bigger real waves.
On some sand bar beaches the waves can close out making it difficult to catch. Watch the other surfers. If they only get a few rips before having to bail, the waves are closing out. When the pocket rolls and the surfers ride for a long time, the waves are better.
Catching Bigger Real Waves
The beginner can once again paddle alongside the pocket and let it come under the board. He remains facing the beach at a 45 degree angle and now rides in the pocket. Then he can start trying to catch waves down the face where the apex forms. The apex is where the foam is first seen coming over the lip. This is the steepest and most powerful part of the wave.
The surfer who catches the wave closest to the apex, has the right of way on the wave. It is time for new surfers to learn the etiquette so they should pay attention if some one is already on the wave they want to ride. The surfer riding the wave has the right of way over someone paddling out, so don’t get in their way.
