Why Surfers Begin with Soft Top Boards
There are several good reasons Why Surfers Begin with Soft Top Boards. Most beginners underestimate the technical requirements and physical endurance demanded by surfing. Surfing looks so effortless when watched on the Big Screen.
Advanced surfers have spent years learning the skills, building the strength and stamina, and developing the courage to ride big waves. It is a slow process of advancement as one might encounter in many sports.
High Volume Boards Make Surfing Easier
A high volume board makes it easier, not easy, to learn the basics and start developing the necessary stamina for catching waves. The board sits higher on the water making it easier to paddle and easier to catch foam waves. The beginner needs to ride foam waves, not real waves.
New surfers can stand in waist deep water to catch foam waves on sand bar beaches like Oceanside. They roll over onto the board when the wave is 20′ away and paddle easy until the wave is about to hit the board and then paddle hard for a few strokes to get the board in front of the wave. Then they can put their hands on it.
Stick With a Soft Top Even As You Learn to Ride Real Waves
The higher volume board makes it easier to execute a pop up. The more volume, like a 9′ board, the more forgiving of a beginner’s inaccurate pop and stance. As boards decrease in volume, everything must be more accurate. So, don’t reduce the volume until you are nailing the ride to the beach.
The soft tops can ride real waves. Start with catching small ones and progress slowly to bigger ones. In the meantime, learn how to bottom turn into the pocket, do a cut back to reverse direction, and accelerate to pick up speed for maneuvers. Then it might be time to look at a hardboard.
If a surfer can’t get to the water frequently, they might be best served sticking with the soft top. It forgives the infrequent visits by remaining easy to paddle and ride.
