Surfers Get Lean and Get Fit to become better surfers. These efforts complement their practice in the water. It takes conditioning to meet bigger challenges.
As waves increase in size, they become heavier and faster. This creates a challenge for surfers to be more fit to meet the challenge. Professionals spend as much time increasing fitness as practicing in the water.
Practices for Getting Lean and Getting Fit
Surfers work to get lean rather than build bulk. A lean body is better to keep the weight off the surfboard which sinks with weight. Leanness creates more oxygen uptake to support greater effort and quicker recovery.
A healthy diet can support weight loss and weight maintenance. Restricted calories will help someone lose weight in combination with exercise. Losing weight will cause the metabolism to slow down certain services and hold onto fat. Exercise and eating more protein will cause the metabolism to speed up.
Reducing carbohydrates will encourage the body to burn fat for fuel. This does not mean reducing vegetables and fruit. It means cutting out sugar and white flour. It means reducing consumption of white bread, pasta, pizza, beer, sodas, and sugary energy drinks,
Getting fit for surfing includes building strength, flexibility, and aerobic fitness. All three are crucial for surfing performance. Pushups, burpies, squats, and deadlifts are four exercises that build strength in the biggest muscles groups and improve flexibility in the hamstrings, buttocks, and lower back.
Aerobic fitness is important to optimize energy for paddling for waves and returning to paddle for another one. As soon as a surfer is tired, the pop up is the first thing to go. Stamina is increased with exercise to induce muscles to absorb more glucose. Glucose provides fuel for longer surf sessions.
