Seniors Can Surf

Seniors can surf with surf lessons and big boards. Three things will help them. They should be flexible, have some upper body strength, and not be too over weight. Those who have some regular physical activities find surfing easier than those who are sedentary.

Surf lessons begin in waist deep water, so swimming is not a big priority. If seniors wanted to learn and stay in water not over their heads, they could get good exercise and have fun.

The Basic Techniques

The basic surf techniques of balancing on the board, catching waves, and popping up to ride are challenging for someone who has not been physically active. Age is functional not chronological and I had a senior 77 years old that was great.

Seniors don’t have to become experts. There is great fun and exercise with beginner and intermediate techniques and abilities. Catching and riding waves may be enough for most just as riding a bike 20 miles can be great.

The beginners start by learning how to roll over on the surf board and catch waves. This alone is great fun. Next they learn the pop up technique which may require some extra stretching and conditioning between lessons. Finally, they learn to ride to the beach. I see people just doing this several times a week and having everything they want.

Get Started

Surfing is great exercise at any level. It will grow the brain because the brain loves physical challenges and will grow to accommodate new demands. Surfing is very cardiovascular. Surfing exercises all the muscles. Surfing burns lots of calories.

Surfing connects people to the ocean which is Mother Nature. The connection is what surfers often prize more than anything. They will often paddle out on days with poor waves just to sit and be wet.
