Learning to Surf the Soft Top Surfboard

the beginner surfer on soft top surfboards

Beginners in Oceanside are Learning to Surf the Soft Top Surfboard. It is not the board you see advanced surfers use in the movies, but surfers can ride 7′ waves on the soft top.

The soft top surfboard can be enjoyable for surfers who do not visit the ocean often. It is very forgiving. It is easy to paddle, easy for catching waves, and easy to ride. Beginner adults start on 9′ boards but can move to 8′ boards and even 7′ or 6′ boards.

Why Go to Shorter Boards?

The reason to go shorter is for better maneuverability, but unless a person has become advanced, that characteristic is not necessary. All the maneuvers can be learned on soft top boards in real waves.

The beginner starts by catching foam waves close to the beach. As he masters the pop up and ride, he can paddle out to bigger foam waves and then attempt small real waves. In the process, the surfer gets stronger paddling muscles, becomes comfortable in the ocean and builds courage, and starts learning how to catch real waves.

The surfer begins catching real waves down the face. Then he learns to catch the wave and before popping up to turn the nose of the board towards the pocket. This can prevent pearling (nose of board goes underwater). On sand bar beaches as opposed to reefs, waves can be steep.

Riding Real Waves

After learning to drop down the face of the wave, the surfer learns to bottom turn into the pocket. At the beginning, he just drives the board straight until the wave runs out of power. Then he learns to accelerate for speed by moving the nose up and down the wave with his front foot.

With speed, the surfer can begin some maneuvers. He learns the cut back which allows him to reverse direction and move back to the power instead of just driving until the wave dies. He can learn to ride up the face to escape a falling lip or to ride up the face and do a cut back to rip the lip.

Part of the beginners journey is to see how big of waves he can ride with his skill and courage. There is often a limit to each. If the surfer learns all these skills and gets to the ocean often, he might consider a hardboard. The first one should be a fun board at 7’6″ with 21″+ width and 2 3/4″ thickness. This isn’t too big of a volume drop and the surfer begins all the processes again.
