Go From Beginner to Advanced in Oceanside Surf Lessons
Many new surfers have gone From Beginner to Advanced in Oceanside Surf Lessons. A few can do it in one lesson, but most take three or more lessons, It is a process of learning, developing skills, and gaining courage.
The beginner starts with a soft top board in waist deep water catching foam waves. He is learning to time waves, catch them, execute a pop up and then ride to the beach. He learns the timing and rhythm which requires patience. Most beginners are anxious and try to go through all the steps too fast.
Paddling Out to Catch Bigger Foam Waves
Then the surfer can paddle out through the foam waves and turn around to catch bigger foam waves. Now he learning to feel comfortable in the ocean and select the waves he wants or doesn’t want. It’s a longer ride with more powerful waves so he is picking up some courage.
Then the surfer can start catching some small real waves that have reformed from the big waves that broke out further. Real waves need better timing and positioning because they only arc for a few seconds. The surfer paddles hard to get in front of the wave and now the board may be pointed down, which is a little scary the first few times.
If the surfer has mastered these techniques so far and has the courage, he can start paddling out to bigger real waves. Bigger waves move faster and have more weight. That means when they land on the surfer, there is going to be a rougher experience.
Learning the Options on Catching and Riding Real Waves
The surfer learns he can catch them down the face, point the board toward the pocket, or catch the wave and then push the nose into the pocket. In real waves, the surfer is riding the pocket instead of being pushed straight forward. He drives the pocket until the wave dies at the start .
The surfer can learn the first maneuver of a bottom turn to get into the pocket. He turns his eyes and then his upper torso in the direction of the turn and then lets it torque down to his feet. He places some pressure on the toes or heels on the side of the carve and moves into the pocket.
Then he learns the cutback to reverse direction and accelerating to get ahead of the falling lip. The better a student learns, the faster he can advance. Good coordination, strength, and stamina will support the progress.
