Can Overweight Surfers Do A Pop Up
One of the obstacles for overweight beginners is whether Overweight Surfers Can Do a Pop Up. I get beginners of all ages and body types. Surfing favors normal weight for many reasons.
One of the issues with being overweight is the person probably stopped exercising and stretching on route. The Body Mass Index calculator classifies whether a person is underweight, normal, overweight, or obese.
How to Do a Surfing Pop Up
The surfing pop up is an athletic feat that requires some upper body, lower body, and core strength as well as flexibility in the hamstrings, buttocks, and lower back. The best way to approach both is with push ups and squats. Squats can be done without weights.
The surfer paddles hard to catch the foam wave and then places his hands next to his rib cage. He glides for a few seconds to develop poise. Then he pushes up and brings one foot under his butt and places it flat on the surfboard. This is where flexibility is an issue. Next, he stands on the foot and lifts his hands as he brings the other foot to the front of the board. This is where weight makes it difficult to get the upper torso into a standing position.
Losing Weight is a Goal for Most Surfers
Most surfers want to lose weight to improve agility, the pop up, increase oxygen uptake and put less weight on short boards. Smaller boards sink with weight. The beginner wants a high volume soft top to make it easier to catch waves, paddle, and stand up.
Overweight surfers can get fit to surf. I have at least three books on how to do it. The best step is the first one. Getting into a routine of losing weight and building strength get a surfer ready. My books The 3 Week Plan and Get Fit to Surf both outline a great process.
Practicing the pop up I explained above every day is a good way to build surf specific muscles and develop the agility to pop up. Put a line on the floor where the feet rest. Lay down with hands next to the rib cage. Place a book next to the hands and a quarter in between the hands. The idea is to pop up placing the front foot as far as the book and on the quarter. The finish stance should be like pushing a tall box with the hands in front and the hips and shoulders square to the front.
