Many adult prospects for surfing wonder Can Everyone Learn to Surf. Even though it is on bucket lists, some doubt they could do it and also wonder about their children.

The truth is most people could learn to surf but many need physical conditioning to execute the techniques. The first people to suffer defeat are the overweight. There is a power to weight ratio discussed by surfers that says you must have the strength to lift your body off the board in the water. Many who could execute a pop up in the dry land lesson can’t do it in the water.

Can You Learn?

A second problem for kids through adults is their ability to learn. Many simply cannot get the instructions going into their ears to transform to their bodies. Surfing is more technical than everyone expects and does require completing the steps from catching waves to riding to the beach in a sequence.

Many cannot memorize nor learn this sequence because their minds are racing with anxiety and they can’t focus. One of my major goals with new students is to get them to slow down and focus on the count I give them for the sequence to get past their thinking and avoid their instincts.

The dry land is a good start and watching Youtube videos can be helpful, but new students are not aware of what they are doing in the water and have to be corrected. Youtube videos become more valuable for advancing after learning the basics.

Being Physically Fit Helps Learning to Surf

Many students are up and riding on the first wave and some advance to riding real waves in the first lesson. There is a wide diversity of success. The more exercise people engage in and the more physical learning they enjoy, the more successful their efforts. The 14-year-old girl who is taking dance, gymnastics, and playing soccer and other things is a prime student for learning. Their brain and bodies are in sync.

Training makes surfing possible for most. Losing weight and building strength are the two main activities to getting into surf shape. Flexibility is the 800 pound gorilla and even exercisers frequently lack flexibility in their hamstrings, buttocks and lower back to execute the pop up. The solution for everyone is squats and dead lifts to create the flexibility and lower body strength. They don’t have to be executed with weights. Second on the list is pushups. They give upper body strength for beginning the pop up and paddling.

I have two books that can assist beginners: Getting Fit to Surf and The 3 Week Plan. Both have guidance on losing weight and building surf specific muscles and stamina. After learning to surf, new surfers have to build additional paddling stamina to progress to bigger waves.
