Many people ask me Can Adults Learn to Surf? Age is chronological but it is also functional. People who exercise and stay in shape have active lifestyles into their 70’s and 80’s. Why decide now you are over the hill?

I have books on how to get fit to surf and it is also a website. Adults at any age can get fit to surf with an exercise routine. Adults can also prepare to surf with some exercises. Most adults unless they have been totally sedentary for years can surf.

The Basic Physical Aspects of Learning to Surf

Learning to surf is physically demanding. It is a full body sports. Most adults if they are active are into one or two activities. This is still good, but leaves some limitations when they have to utilize upper body, lower body, and core strength. They also need flexibility and stamina. A lot to ask.

Kids used to get all this through their outdoor play, but even they don’t play anymore. They screen. We are getting weak. Professional surfers spend as much time out of the water making their bodies stronger as they spend in the water.

Surfing requires a lot of paddling which is like swimming, but more tiring because it is sprinting to catch waves. Only a few strong strokes are needed to catch a wave, but if you ride 20 waves, that is is a lot of paddling.

The surfer needs to lift his body off the surfboard to put his feet on the board. There is a power to weight ratio we mention as the ability to lift one’s weight. Overweight requires more strength. The surfer puts a back foot on the board and holds his body up while he moves the front foot forward. His body is suspended with his arms and back foot.

When the surfer puts his front foot on the board in the pop up, he then stands into the correct stance. Riding the surfboard is easy if you are in the proper balanced stance. The first objective is to catch foam waves and ride straight to the beach.

Everything else is learned with more time in the water. Each lesson or venture out is an opportunity to learn more.
