How Important is Surf Paddling Stamina

develop paddling stamina

Beginners see riding the surf board as the challenge but don’t realize How Important is Surf Paddling Stamina. The most tiring part of surfing is the paddling.

Learning the beginning techniques of catching waves, doing a pop up and riding the surf board is a real challenge. What beginners don’t expect is how tiring surf paddling becomes. When the paddling is gone, so is the surf session. It has a slow drain on over all energy.

Beginners Start with Foam Wave Paddling

My students learn in foam waves in waist deep water near the beach. They paddle to catch a wave and then drag the board back to the waves. In an hour, a student might catch 15-20 waves. Just this short amount of paddling is tiring.

When a surfer progresses, they paddle out through the waves and turn around to catch the next wave. In paddling out, the surfer dodges the bad waves and looks for the bigger foam wave that looks good. After this, they start looking for real waves that might have reformed and tries to begin catching those.

What is a Good Comparison to Surf Paddling?

Now the surfer is paddling for an hour. You might ask, can I swim for an hour. One new surf student who was an ocean swimmer said paddling for an hour was more tiring than swimming in the surf for an hour. This might give you an idea.

There are several ways to build paddling stamina. Paddling is the best way. Next comes good aerobics to build cardiovascular capability. Paddling requires muscle and muscle requires glucose stores. Muscles adds glucose storage from building and exercising muscle. Any upper body work can add muscle.

Good Paddling Exercises to Develop Stamina

My favorite exercises for upper body are pushups and cables. They exercise the shoulders, arms, back, and core. Additional weight work with machines, dumbbells, or barbells would add upper body muscle and increase glucose stores.

The more upper body strength and stamina, the longer a surf session can last. Once a surfer wants to start paddling our further to the line up to catch real waves, there is a lot more paddling. Surfers say when they don’t surf for a few weeks, the stamina starts to diminish. Like a top runner, they say stamina diminishes after 36 hours of not running.

The other good counter measure to paddling is a high volume surf board. They float on the water and need less energy to move them. Week end warriors can use high volume soft tops at the beginning and then may move to 9′ and 9’6″ hard boards. These board all make paddling easier. Surfers want to ride more waves and easier paddling is helpful.
