The Right Beginner Stance on a Surf Board
The right beginner stance on a surf board is the key to riding and staying on the board. Many beginners trying on their own and even those in lessons manage to get up on the board but they can’t stay on.
The right stance is necessary to ride straight to the beach, which should be the first goal for beginners in foam waves. It is important to be using a soft top board. Short boards are not meant for catching foam waves.
The Basics of the Beginner Surf Board Stance
The surfer should be on the surfboard with their feet should width apart. The hips and shoulders have to be square to the front. Snowboarders and skateboarders like to have a shoulder back, but this is bad for surfing. It puts the weight on your heels and causes you to fall off butt side of the board.
Weight should be equal on the front and back leg. Knees need to be flexed and soft to ride the surfboard once up. Surfers like to feel the board with their feet, so soft riding is good. Hands should be in front where you can see them. A hand behind your body is what I call snowboarding.
The pop up puts your body in the right stance. I have beginner students put a back foot on the board under their butt and stand on that while lifting their hands and then placing their front foot. The body comes forward straight without letting either hand/arm get behind the body.
The surfboard should go straight to the beach without any effort if your posture is correct on the surfboard.
