The Fundamentals of Senior Surfing Fitness

I have many senior surfing students who stay active with walking, bike rides, yoga, and even pillates. They are all excellent but only effect parts of our bodies as needed for surfing.

As we age, our muscles begin to atrophy. Building muscle requires resistance exercises. As we sit more, our muscles lose flexibility. Unless we raise our heart beats, our cardiovascular system loses stamina.

How do you do everything? What if the energy is not there to do vigorous exercise? This also becomes a problem, but no unsolvable. It may be too late for a senior to become a professional, but he can enjoy the exercise of surfing on a regular basis.

The challenge is developing the initial fitness. There are a few exercises that provide most of the strength and flexibility for the beginner. Can you do a burpie? Most people know what this is. Even one is a start. Work up to ten. This provides a good base for the surfing pop up.

Seniors lose upper body strength. This is essential. The surfer pushes himself off the board to get his feet underneath is body to stand up. Nothing is more helpful than pushups. Can you do one? That is a good start. Bench presses with just a barbell is good. Pulling and pushing cables that might be a set you wrap around a pole helps arms shoulders and backs.

Flexibility is needed in the hamstrings, buttocks, and lower back. A stiff spine is a hindrance to the pop up. Doing squats and dead lifts without weights is a great start. They give the important surfing muscles flexibility. They strengthen the legs for standing up.

Cardiovascular can begin by extending the duration of easy exercise. Walks can begin at a half hour and be extended to an hour. This begins to build stamina and recovery. The body will build better circulation as demand increases. Biking, jogging, swimming, and treadmills are all excellent.

Being overweight can be a hindrance, but seniors may also have difficulty keeping weight on their body as appetites diminish. Addictions to bad foods rather than healthy calories can impede the muscles demands for energy. Protein, good fats, and minimum carbohydrates will supply the body with energy for exercise and recovery.

Patience with slow progress is helpful. Getting in shape is like watching paint dry. It takes daily dedication. Each week, the exerciser should try to build intensity by adding speed, duration, or intervals. Adding even two to five percent is great growth.

Practicing the surfing pop up can be essential. Daily practice of five to 20 pop ups will deliver measurable results in the water. Seniors start out with high volume boards practicing in the foam. They most likely will stick with these high volume boards because they are easy to paddle and ride.
