Families Progress in Surfing Together
Families Progress in Surfing Together with lessons. In Oceanside, it is easy to learn on foam waves where students don’t have to go deeper than their waists to learn to surf.
Surf lessons begin with a dry land portion to discuss safety and learn techniques. Students begin on soft top boards which are easy to ride and won’t hurt if they hit you. Then lessons in the water begin with the instructor pushing students into waves.
What Are the Basic Surf Techniques Families Learn
Safety with the surfboard is important. Adults and kids learn to drag the board behind them and not hold it up between their body and the wave or the wave will hit the board and knock them down. Then students learn how to roll over on the board properly as the wave approaches.
Once on the surfboard, the student paddles straight toward the beach. He looks back to see when the foam wave will hit the board and then paddles hard three times to get in front of the foam wave after it hits. This is the same basic technique used for riding real waves.
Like on real waves, once the wave is pushing the board, the surfer puts his hands in a man’s push up position. He pushes as he moves one foot under his butt so he can stand on it. This requires flexibility and many adults have lost theirs because of sedentary lifestyles.
As the student stands on the rear foot, he lifts his hands. It is important to lift the hands at this point and not remain holding onto the surfboard as he moves his front foot to the board. If the hands are not lifted, both feet remain behind the hands and the surfer’s weight is on the back of the board.
As the student stands and raises his hands, he moves the front foot to the nose of the board keeping shoulders squared to the front and both hands in front of the body. If one hand trails like on a snowboard, the surfers weight shifts to his heels and he falls off the back of the surf board.
Making Progress
Surfers first learn to ride straight to the beach without falling off. Adults and kids have now become comfortable in the ocean and maybe ready to progress. The next step is paddling out through the waves and turning around to catch a bigger foam waves. This is easy at Oceanside because on a sand bar beach, the waves break out further and roll to the beach.
Now the student is selecting the waves to ride and getting bigger waves with longer rides. At some point, the student can look for real waves that are 2′ to 3′. Now the timing is different. The real wave arcs and only allows a few seconds to paddle and pop. Getting into the right spot takes some experience and judgment.
Once students can catch real waves riding down the face, they can begin to learn maneuvers for riding the waves in the pocket. This can all be accomplished on soft top boards. The student is now an intermediate and ready for more adventure.
